What to Do When a Storm Damages Your Roof in Houston

July 14, 2026 Picasso Roofing & Remodeling LLC

Houston gets its share of hail, high wind and tropical storms, and the roof takes the first hit. What you do in the first few days makes a big difference to how much damage spreads inside the house — and to how smoothly an insurance claim goes.

Start safely. Don't climb onto a wet or damaged roof. Walk around the house and look from the ground: missing or lifted shingles, dented gutters and vents, granules piling up at the downspouts, and branches on the roof are all signs to look closer.

Then check inside. Look at ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains, and if you can get into the attic safely, look for wet insulation or daylight through the decking. Put buckets under any drips and move furniture and electronics out of the way.

Take photos of everything — outside and inside — with the date. If you plan to file an insurance claim, call your insurer soon and write down your claim number.

If water is getting in, the roof needs to be covered right away. A properly secured tarp stops the damage from spreading while the repair is planned. Don't wait for the adjuster before protecting the house; insurers expect you to prevent further damage.

Finally, get a roofer you trust to inspect it. A good inspection tells you what was damaged by the storm, what was already worn, and whether a repair will do or the roof needs replacing.
