Shingle, Tile, Slate or Metal? Choosing a Roof for Houston Weather

August 18, 2026 Picasso Roofing & Remodeling LLC

When it's time for a new roof, most people simply replace what they had. That's often the right call — but it's worth knowing what each material does well in our climate before you decide.

Asphalt shingles are on most Houston homes for good reason: they're affordable, come in many colors, and modern architectural shingles carry strong wind ratings. In our heat they won't last as long as the alternatives, so good attic ventilation matters a lot.

Clay and concrete tile handle heat beautifully and can last for decades. They're heavy, so the roof structure has to be able to carry them, and a tile roof is only as good as the underlayment beneath it.

Natural slate is the longest-lasting roof of all, and the most expensive. It's a premium choice for the right house, and it needs a roofer who knows how to repair it without breaking it.

Metal roofing — standing seam for homes, R-panel for shops and barns — sheds heavy rain, reflects summer sun and stands up well to wind. It costs more than shingles up front but often lasts two or three times as long.

Flat and low-slope sections need a membrane instead: TPO and PVC for most commercial roofs, and torch-down modified bitumen for smaller flat areas.

Not sure which is right for you? Picasso Roofing & Remodeling LLC installs all of them, so we have no reason to push one over another. Call (281) 846-9368 for a free estimate.
